The Cornerstone

 

I was one of those parents who grumbled that schools just don't teach spelling like they used to . . . until I got a load of our grade school's cornerstone.

 

An august, older building, our school was built in the 1920's - what I used to think as "the good old days" of quality education.

 

HAH!

 

One day I happened to look at the old, gray cornerstone, when what to my wondering eyes should appear in the brief wording on it but TWO spelling errors - "builder's" for "builders" and "arected" for "erected."

 

            Not only that, but the spelling errors were ETCHED IN STONE!!!

 

            It's funny what a little reality check will do for your perspective. Maybe the good old days weren't so hot after all.

 

Of course, THESE are the "good old days" of the future . . . so let's all promise to do a better job proofreading for each other, so the moms of tomorrow don't have a chance to get so huffy.
