Nouns

 

            A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing or idea, either specifically or in general. Examples of different nouns:

 

            Person: Sam, sister, firefighter

 

            Place: Mt. Everest, mountain, Nebraska, state

 

            Thing: iPod, coffee cup, Ford Ranger

 

            Idea: joy, independence, happiness

 

            A compound noun combines two or more words in a single noun: mountain range, Sam Smith, toaster oven

 

            A collective noun combines two or more objects or people into one group, but is singular in form: children, committee, team
